Named one of Yankee Magazine’s 2010 Top 20 Events – – we take you back in time to life in 1775. A lot of fun with a bit of history thrown in! History comes alive with an encampment of soldier re-enactors and period demonstrations. Watch a skirmish between the redcoats and patriots. Visit the trappers, timber framers, blacksmith, woodworkers, weavers, spinner. Throw a tomahawk or toss an antler. Watch the children’s activities: cornhusk dollmaking, hoop-rolling, etc. Taste period food: moose or venison stew, meat pies, beans, cornbread, fruit pies, etc. Enjoy the UMM’s Ukulele Band, Barbara Lapham, fiddler; John Viselli, guitarist; Elna Davis on accordion. Listen to the stories of our heroes: Jeremiah O’Brien, Hannah Weston, Rev. Lyons, Passamaquoddy Chief Jean Baptiste Neptune.

You can shop contemporary artists and crafters. Past participants have sold salts, teas, embroidery, quilts, soaps, jellies, Native American baskets, jewelry, painted feathers, books, birch roses, watercolors, rugs, canoes, doll clothes, and dog collars.

Area historical societies answer questions, help with genealogy and sell items for fundraisers. The US Post Office will be there with a special stamp cancellation booth.

In 2015 the US Navy Band Northeast gave the community an unforgettable performance. Other 2015 attendees included: Vice President Doug Woods with The New England Sons of the American Revolution, Rep. Brian Hopbart, Maliseet Nation Rep. Henry Bear and Passamaquoddy Madonna Socobasin. Will Tuell officiated at the naming of our town bridge The Jeremiah O’Brien Bridge. Come early: Saturday begins with a Pancake Breakfast at the American Legion Hall on Court Street, followed by a 10:00 parade from Helen’s to the college

On the same day Machias’ historic Burnham Tavern Museum will be open and giving tours for a small admission fee. Docents in colonial dress will be on hand to welcome visitors. The “Tavern” is the oldest building in eastern Maine and the only one with a Revolutionary War history, for it was to Burnham Tavern that the British wounded were taken following the Battle of the Margaretta.
